Ross Coleman - Maintenance team member

"Wherever you are, whatever job you're on, someone's always got your back."

Ross Coleman came to Higgins seven years ago to work on a 12 month construction contract. Since then, he's never looked back. Now, Ross is pretty much a jack-of-all-trades where everyday is different. From road-kill clean-up, to asphalt reinstatement, road accidents, to fire and industrial emergencies, Ross does it all.

Not only can anything happen in Ross's role, but it can happen at any time ... 24-7-365. "Not long ago I got a call about 1.30am to respond to an emergency. I had no idea what I was getting into until I arrived. Turned out a heap of palm kernel stored in an industrial site was going up in flames. I had to manage over 20 guys and work with the local council and police to get roads closed, keep pedestrians clear of danger, and see that other buildings were evacuated." And that's just one example of a day in the life of Ross Coleman.

Ross believes it's not just about looking after yourself, but making sure your work-mates are safe too. "We all get comprehensive first-aid training, we have site-safe strategies in place, traffic management plans, and detailed weekly 'tool-box' meetings where we clearly communicate issues and concerns to ensure safety for the team and any third parties involved, including the public." Ross believes the best safety precaution is to make sure everyone involved knows what's going on, and there's always one key communicator in any given team – kind of like the camp mother.
