KMA Plant
New equipment
07 January 2009
The technological benefits offered by the companies new Wirtgen KMA 200 Mobile Pug Mill were successfully demonstrated on the recent Avalon Drive Bypass Project in Hamilton.
The high tech German machine can process a wide variety of different cold granular materials and binders (like a giant cake mixer) to suit the project involved. Mixing in binders and additives to the KMA plant results in a homogeneous material giving the designer more confidence in the strength properties and allows thicker pavement layers to be laid compared to the conventional method of spreading and hoeing in the additives. Adopting thicker stronger underlying cold laid pavement layers, allows overlying premium hot mixed asphalt layers to be mininimised saving energy and costs as well as making the process environmentally friendly.
On Avalon Drive, a specific mix was developed with cement and NZTA M4 basecourse to minimise rutting thus improving road pavement performance.
