Our People
Awapuni Concrete Plant Manager, Palmerston North
"A good workplace is where you go hard, have a laugh, and get home safe."
"We produce concrete on-demand. It's possible to call us with an order at 10 and get it delivered by 11."
When you're managing 12 staff and producing around 65m3 of concrete per hour, and taking 200 phone-calls a day, you need to be running a tight ship. Such a role would normally take two or three staff but Aaron Currie does it single-handedly. "It all comes down to efficient processes, thinking on your feet, and working bloody hard".
It's not unusual for Aaron's team to come in a little early to get an extra order out the gates. "Take today. We all came in at 2.30am because we had a large order in for 120m3 that needed to be down for a floor by 6.30am. we pulled that off then started our normal day-to-day jobs afterwards. "That's the sort of work ethic that's become an integral part of Higgins' company culture.
"At Awapuni we're committed to keeping the bar high ...... actually, we want to be constantly raising it". High standards are bred into Aaron and his team - in fact, that goes for the entire Higgins workforce. "Take water, 90% of our water is recycled - it simply goes around and around and it's only disposed of when it can't be used anymore." Additionally, dust extractor fans collect airborne matter that's then stored and disposed of appropriately. "Looking after the environment isn't just for hairy hippies anymore, we all need to play our part".
