Manawatu team wins Roading Excellence Award

The Manawatu Gorge Slip Remediation team have been awarded the Roading New Zealand Excellence Award for a ‘Medium Sized Road” project.

The section of State Highway 3 that runs through the Manawatu Gorge was closed due to a massive slip. The narrow road cuts through the Southern side of the Gorge and is perched 20 metres above the Manawatu river level.

Despite the high risk environment, there were no serious harm injuries and the project achieved excellent results. The affected communities were kept informed throughout and with a sustained effort, the road was returned to full service in an accelerated 13 months period. The team in consultation with iwi worked to protect the native environment and the team constructed a forest lookout at the top of the slip for the community to enjoy.

“I am delighted that the teams’ efforts have been recognised,” said Mark Martin, Higgins Maintenance Engineer. “Working seven days a week, 24 hours a day, in difficult winter conditions resulted in the road being opened four months earlier than scheduled. What’s more, the Gorge has been hit by heavy rainfall a number of times since and there have been no further slips.”
