Kopane Bridge Project - Manawatu
Higgins Contractors Projects Division managed the construction of a new 72 metre concrete Kopane Bridge.
Project Overview
Located north east of Palmerston North in the Manawatu District, Kopane Bridge is a significant regional commuting route. A new Kopane bridge was constructed 4m higher than the old bridge to protect the route from the consequences of possible flooding. The project called for the construction of a higher bridge deck with new embankments leading up to and from the bridge which involved 100,000 m3 of earthworks and 1km of new roads.
Higgins Role
As the Head Contractor, Higgins Contractors Projects Division was responsible for managing the contracting along with specialist subcontractors to ensure the successful delivery of the project. The contract allowed for a eighteen month contract period, but the team succeeded in delivering the project ahead of time within a twelve month period. David Rubery (Projects Division Manager) reported "The combined project team from Horizons, GHD Engineering and Higgins formed an excellent collaborative approach which resulted in a positive project for all parties".
The project team received the Roading New Zealand Excellence Award in the category ‘Minor Road Project’ in 2011 and were highly commended in the Ingenium Awards in the $2.0million - $10 million project category.
